Special exhibition: Caspar David Friedrich – The Painter
Caspar David Friedrich's landscape paintings are among the most internationally renowned works of art. The bright, sometimes almost garish colours of the sunset or the mysterious melancholic light of the moon and the endlessly stretched distance in his paintings have had a lasting new impact on the view of nature. Friedrich's paintings are extremely finely executed. They gain their great radiance from a sensitive transparency in the application of colour and the magic of their nuances.
In the exhibition at the Albertinum, Friedrich's paintings are juxtaposed with the most important landscapes from the Dresden Old Masters Picture Gallery that once inspired him. These landscapes by the great masters - Jakob Ruisdael, Salvatore Rosa and Claude Lorrain - were already among the gallery's most highly regarded major works during Friedrich's lifetime.
